Do you experience jaw pain, frequent headaches, or notice popping and clicking sounds when you move your jaw?

You’re not alone—an estimated 10 million people in the U.S. are affected by TMJ disorders, yet many go undiagnosed and untreated. Early symptoms are often mild or intermittent, making them easy to ignore. In many cases, individuals don’t realize that their earaches or headaches could be linked to TMD.

Do I Have TMJ?

Many people are confused by the term “TMJ.” TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint—the two joints that connect your lower jaw to your skull, one on each side of your head. Everyone has TMJs, but not everyone has problems with them.

When issues do arise—such as pain, inflammation, or misalignment affecting the joints, ligaments, or surrounding muscles—they fall under a broader category known as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder.

So, while TMJ refers to the joint itself, TMD refers to the conditions or disorders that affect the jaw joint and its function.

Treatment Options for TMJ Disorders

Once we have a complete understanding of your TMJ condition, our team will design a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your unique needs. We focus on conservative, non-surgical approaches that promote your body’s natural healing processes. Surgery is considered only when absolutely necessary. Below are some of the treatment methods we may use:

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging (CBCT)

We use Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) to obtain a highly detailed 3D image of your skull, jaw joints, sinuses, and teeth. Unlike traditional dental x-rays, CBCT provides a full view that helps identify joint dysfunction and related structures. These images are interpreted by a board-certified radiologist and shared with your medical team for a collaborative approach to care.

Splint (Orthotic) Therapy

Splint therapy helps stabilize and decompress the jaw joint. Unlike a standard nightguard that simply protects teeth, a custom-designed orthopedic splint (orthotic) supports the jaw joints and addresses the root cause of dysfunction. Frequent, precise adjustments are essential for optimal healing.

Cold Laser Therapy (Photobiomodulation – PBM)

We utilize the MLS Class IV Laser System, a cutting-edge technology that offers non-invasive pain relief, reduces inflammation, and accelerates tissue healing. PBM therapy stimulates cellular activity and enhances stem cell differentiation, all without discomfort or downtime. Its synchronized dual wavelengths allow for a more effective and faster healing process without any thermal side effects.

Botox® Injections

Botox may be used to relieve muscle pain caused by clenching, especially when combined with other therapies. However, it’s critical to rule out underlying causes—such as sleep apnea—before proceeding. Often, addressing the root issue can reduce or eliminate the need for ongoing injections.

I-PRF Regenerative Injections

Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin (I-PRF) involves using a portion of your own blood, processed to concentrate healing platelets and growth factors. This powerful regenerative material is injected into the affected joint to promote cartilage repair, reduce inflammation, and restore joint mobility. The procedure is safe and requires no recovery time.

Prolotherapy Injections

Prolotherapy is a natural technique that uses dextrose injections to stimulate the body’s healing response in ligaments and tendons. It encourages tissue regeneration, strengthens the supportive structures, and helps relieve chronic pain.

Intraoral Massage Therapy

Targeted intraoral massage helps release tension in the facial muscles, improve jaw mobility, and reduce pain. This therapy is often used alongside other treatments for a more holistic approach to relief.
